Reredos – a beautiful 13-panel artwork

A reredos is a large altarpiece. Divided into thirteen panels, it depicts scenes from the Last Judgement. Its design was inspired by a medieval continental type – possibly a German or Flemish fifteenth century example.

The reredos in St Mary’s is located at the western end of the St Nicholas Chapel.

Commissioning of the reredos

This work was funded by Canon Bridges and his contemporaries and completed by Clayton and Bell in 1869. Installed to cover the gap left by a window which was removed when the new vestry was added.

It was recently cleaned and the vibrant colours revealed once more.

While somewhat out of place in this small English parish church, it is a beautiful piece of artwork which deserves much attention.
